Environmental

Environmental

Cirka’s commitment to providing a superior environmental service is demonstrated by our AS/NZS ISO 14001:2015 national certification in Environmental Management.

We have a dedicated Environment Manager who oversees our environmental policy, framework and training program. They ensure we are continually evaluating our processes to reduce environmental risk and improve environmental performance, while always maintaining a quality service with a focus on price.

Training & Education

Our Environment, Human Resources and Operations Managers train our team in our environmental policy and procedures through a comprehensive induction process, followed up with quarterly site meetings, training sessions and annual refresher induction training.

Our Environment Manager attends regular courses and seminars covering the latest developments and innovations in technology and best practice to ensure we are continually improving our processes as well as being able to pro-actively recommend solutions to our customers. We encourage our customers and staff to be involved with key environmental initiatives including Clean Up Australia Day, Earth Hour, World Environment Day, Ride2Work Day and National Recycling Week.

Recycling and Waste Management

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australians are among the highest waste producers in the world with more than 21 million tonnes of waste being sent to landfill each year. Minimising waste to landfill and increasing the rate of recycling is vital in the quest for a greener environment.

Cirka has developed a waste management system which includes the weighing, tracking and reporting of waste and recycling activities. This allows customers to understand the split of waste going to landfill, recycling facilities or refuse and to adopt strategies to reduce tonnage to landfill. We also assist in the education of tenants to ensure recycling processes and targets are understood and met.

Waste Management System Results

Cirka were awarded the waste and environmental management services of one of our existing premium office buildings contracts. We analysed the type and volume of waste being sent to landfill, to a recycling facility or to refuse. These results highlighted the opportunities for improvement and we then tailored a program which delivered the following results within 4 months:

  • Reduced waste and environmental contractors from 5 to 1.
  • Achieved a 3 star NABERS waste rating after a rating of 0 in the prior year.
  • Achieved more than a 10% increase in recycling to 60% of all waste.
  • Introduced paper only under desk boxes and educated tenants on the new program resulting in contamination levels of less than 5%.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

We work with our suppliers and staff to minimise our company’s carbon footprint and to achieve best practice in the use of energy resources. Examples of this include:

  • Assessing our Head Office using the independent NABERS Energy rating system to identify ways we can operate more efficiently.
  • Belonging to the CitySwitch program.
  • Encouraging staff to catch public transport to and from work.
  • Sourcing environmentally friendly cleaning materials, using only microfibre cloths and AGAR’s Green Cleaning System chemicals.
  • Ordering consumables and equipment in bulk to minimise delivery carbon and financial costs.
  • Using Cirka commissioned technology to minimise paper reporting.
  • Recommending and implementing hygiene waste units which utilise biodegradable cartridges in a 450 site contract. These units have delivered significant environmental benefits and cost savings.

New Technology & Equipment

Cirka invests in innovative systems and assets that deliver high quality and sustainable results. Examples of these include:

  • Our intranet based Integrated Management System (IMS) which allows our customers access to real time reporting and detailed information online, reducing the need for paper reporting.
  • All Customer Service Managers are equipped with tablets to reduce paper usage and improve efficiencies.
  • Site specific daily inspection reports which can be instantly uploaded to our IMS.
  • Our automated time and attendance system called “City Time”, which is used on site via a swipe card and removes the need for paper sign in.
  • Rotowash carpet/hard floor cleaners which use significantly less water and chemicals while delivering a high quality finish and reduced drying times.
  • All our auto-scrubbers are fitted with ec-H20 technology, which eliminates the use of chemicals, reduces water usage by 70% and cleans more effectively compared to traditional cleaning methods.

Our client stated,

Cirka provided invaluable support in obtaining our NABERS Waste rating in 2013. They ensured appropriate and sufficient staff were onsite to facilitate all requests from the NABERS assessor, contributing to our successful result of 3 stars. Thank you must go both to staff and management for their ongoing assistance with implementation of a new waste strategy and seeing this strategy through to fruition.
